Are instrumentalists always expected to identify with the music they perform? Though this is arguably not the case, playing music can become a way to a better understanding of oneself, one’s needs, emotions, and to one’s self-identification as an artist. This album is also a presentation of unknown works by Polish composers, some of whom worked in their fatherland while others had to leave it. By presenting their music here through the prism of my own experiences and interpretations, I pay my homage to these artists. The album’s programme was also the subject of a performance arts concert titled Reflection, directed by Magdalena Urbańska, during which I presented these works with the actress Alicja Wojnowska and confronted myself with the emotions that this music evokes in me. Paweł Łukaszewski’s oeuvre is associated primarily with choral music, and his sacred works are recognised and highly regarded around the world. Selected for this album was a sample representative of his compositional style, which eludes unequivocal classification.

The Silesian Quartet’s most recent release of Mieczysław Wajnberg’s complete chamber works with string quartet under the CD Accord label.

The CD was recorded on 19th March 2021 in the Main Hall of the Witold Lutosławski National Forum of Music during a concert held as part of 75 Years of the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic.

The four strongly contrasting pieces form a compact cycle, expressive in texture, harmony and intense lyricism, subtly tinged with folklore.

The small number of works and their limited distribution already during the composer’s lifetime make it difficult to ascertain the place of Franz Xaver Mozart in the history of keyboard music.
