Featuring prominently in the prolificacy of Bach’s compositions are three suite cycles, each six in number – French Suites, English Suites and Partitas. They represent as it were, three successive compositional stages reflecting progressively higher levels of form-building procedures and increasingly difficult performance techniques. In this respect, the French Suites are the most classical, in that they follow a design of symmetrical patterns and simple structures, whereas the polyphonic treatment of the English Suites with extensively developed sections – particularly in the opening preludes of the set – already display a rather more Bachian approach. However the six Partitas, represent a fully integrated work written for harpsichord, generically conforming to the suite principle (Bach’s Well-tempered Clavier and the Goldberg variations being similar examples).
Bach’s Partitas are among the few works that were printed during the composer’s lifetime and individually published between 1726-30. Notwithstanding, the complete collection appeared in print in 1731 under the title ‘Clavier Übung bestehend in Praeludien, Allemanden, Couranten, Sarabanden, Giguen, Menuetten und anderen Galanterien.
