Łukasz Borowicz
He has served as artistic director of the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra since March 2007. Born in 1977 in Warsaw, he studied with Bogusław Madey at the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, where he also later obtained a doctoral degree in conducting under the supervision of Antoni Wit. He was Iván Fischer’s
assistant with the Budapest Festival Orchestra (2000/01), Antoni Wit’s at Warsaw Philharmonic (2002–2005), and Kazimierz Kord’s at the Grand Theatre – Polish National Opera in Warsaw (2005–2006). Since 2006 he has been the first guest conductor of Poznań Philharmonic. He has received several grants from the Ministry of Culture and is a prize-winner of four conducting competitions: in Trent (1999), Athens (2000), Porto (2002) and Bamberg (2004). In January 2008 he was granted the “Passport” Award of the ”Polityka” weekly and in October 2011 – the “Coryphaeus of Polish Music” Award.
He has appeared with many outstanding ensembles including the Konzerthausorchester from Berlin, Komische Oper in Berlin, NDR Radiophilharmonie in Hannover, MDR Sinfonieorchester in Leipzig, Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, Staatskapelle in Halle, Orchestra of the Opéra de Marseille, I Pomeriggi Musicali in Milan, the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, Prague Symphony Orchestra FOK, the National Philharmonic of Russia, the Symphony Orchestra of the National Philharmonic of Ukraine, and most Polish symphony orchestras.
With the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Łukasz Borowicz gives performances of forgotten operas, such as Moniuszko’s The Raftsman, Laks’s L’Hirondelle inattendue (EDA Records) and works released on CDs by Polish Radio: Statkowski’s Maria, Bacewicz’s The Adventure of King Arthur and Dobrzyński’s Monbar or the Filibusters, and during the Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festivals in Warsaw, in co-production with Polish Radio: Cherubini’s Lodoïska, Spohr’s Berggeist, Weber’s Euryanthe, Donizetti’s Maria Padilla, and Montemezzi’s L’amore dei tre re.
For the Chandos label, Borowicz has recorded Grażyna Bacewicz’s complete violin concerti (with Joanna Kurkowicz as soloist). For the cpo label, he is now recording the complete symphonic works of Andrzej Panufnik with the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Konzerthausorchester from Berlin. His recordings have been awarded the BBC Music Magazine’s “Orchestral Choice” (August 2010), Diapason d’Or (March 2010) and two Fryderyk Awards (2007, 2010), as well as being nominated for the MIDEM Classical Award (2008) and the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik (2009).
